Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the audi spare keys in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of your audi a3 replacement key's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a typical part across the audi etron key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
